curl experiment

do any of you remember those little pink sponge hair rollers from when you were a kid?

you'd wash your hair at night, then your mom would wind sections of your hair onto a zillion rollers which snapped securely at the top. then, you'd feebly attempt to sleep on a pillow of pink plastic and crackly-sounding sponge, tossing and turning, and pulling your hairs out by the scalp in the process.

in the morning, mom would carefully unroll the curls, one at a time, and you'd have a headful of curls that would make shirley temple blush.

well, my girl wanted to test this theory. so we went to target, bought a pack of old-fashioned rollers and a pack of newfangled "spiral" rollers. we washed, conditioned, gelled, and rolled. she slept, but when i asked her in the morning HOW she slept, she said, "OK." when i asked if she'd do it again for curls, she said, "sure." we unwrapped the curls, and here is the result.

hey, susan, if you're reading this you can see the tomato plants peeking into the corner of the top photo. they are hugely insane and out-of-control. more later on them...

I remember those curlers and probably still have some lying around in old boxes in the basement. Because my hair is naturally curly the curlers made it into an afro-like doo. Not a good look for me.
E wants to let your daughter know she loves her hair and thinks she is very pretty.

Wow! Gorgeous! Your daughter is so darn cute!

I had to curl my daughters hair everyday for two weeks with those curlers just a couple years ago. She needed her hair curly for the school play. I didn't even think we could still buy them, but sure enough, K-Mart had some.

When I was growing up we used those 2-inch round bristly curlers. We managed to sleep just fine. I can't even imagine doing that. We have it so much nicer today, in more ways than just curlers, huh?

Holy moly! what a cutie. Strike a pose. I loved those pink spongy curlers. We used to do that all the time. I'd curl my hair and it would look great for an hour then fall flat. haha

1.) I remember those curlers and those tossy-turny nights too.

2.) Your girl looks like a 1930's movie star with those curls, the one barrette and the boa and all.

3.) Yeah! The tomatoes are thriving! I have 1 plant in a pot on the balcony and it's up to my shoulder now (I'm 5'10") with about 10 golf ball-sized green tomatoes. I'm sure with the Carolina sun and a full yard, you're at least there. Oh and by the way, last year we ate our last tomato just before leaving for Christmas vacation, so enjoy!

I remember those curlers. Not with a great deal of love, but I remember them. I like your daughter's look-- very Shirley Temple-esque.

Whenever I try those curlers, on myself OR Maya, they fall out of half of our hair, but not all of it, while we sleep. Not the look we're going for here. Your daughter, however, looks GORGEOUS, and it appears that you did an awesome job with those curlers. Can you come do our hair next?
