school pictures

to answer lotus' question... i am here! life has been very full lately, in the good kind of way. not much time or interest in sitting in front of the computer these days, but i'm thinking of you all and blogging in my head on a daily basis. just when it comes down to actually blogging, or reading YOUR blogs, i'm tired out! maybe things will calm down and i'll be able to catch up (again) and be here more often.

last week we got the kids' school pictures sent home. remember school picture time? when you, or your mom, would choose the perfect outfit or do your hair in just the right way. when you got to the gym or cafeteria you'd get a little black plastic comb? everyone would practice their best smiles... deciding whether or not to show teeth. one by one, your classmates would be seated on a brightly lit little white box in front of a pull-down background. the assistant would pose them, tilt their heads just so, and FLASH! it was all over. when it came your turn, all the preparation and anticipation was over in that flashy instant, leaving you wondering... was my hair right? was my smile ok?

then came the day when the packets were distributed. is that REALLY how you smiled? REALLY? the best laid plans of hair and smiles came out like THIS?! no one could WAIT until their mom said it was ok to cut them up so they could trade photos with their friends.

here's what my kids came home with. the portrait package is $45.

this is a pretty cute photo of her, but she has jutted her lower jaw out and grinned perfectly so that her "tooth-hole" shows. the shirt UNDERNEATH the coat is the one she chose to wear for pictures, but when it came right down to it, she wanted the fur collar in her photo. very, very in keeping with her personality. don't think i'll spend $45 on it. we have better snapshots of her.

poor h. he hates having his picture taken. he runs and hides. probably because when the photo isn't candid he looks like this. like he's in pain. this is not a smile, it's a grimace! although i do like his choice of shirt and the color they chose for the background. red has always been his favorite color. again, why waste $45?

the frenzy is over until next year.

Beneath the jaw out grin and the grimace, it's still easy to see what cuties your kids are.

I would be tempted to buy them anyway, because even my bad school photos make me laugh so much as an adult!

I do understand about the $45, though, and the great thing about digital cameras is that it's so easy to capture a TON of really great photos of your kids!

$45 is a lot, but I guess they are way higher than when I was a kid...so two kids is $90? Hmm, you're better off with your own personal photos plus the kids are so cute!!

They are so adorable! But I get what you mean about the whole school photo thing. I think it's a bit archaic these days of digital photography and instant replay.

I usually just keep the class photos as a reminder of how they looked :)

What CUTE kids! Love the pictures. If that's a grimace, then it's an awfully cute one :)

By the way, I emailed you twice w/my address. I guess you didn't get the first one? Maybe it went to your junk mail (har har). Anyway let me know if you get the second email.

They both look adorable in their pics! I love the tooth hole on s and I think h looks like a sweet little boy in this photo.

Do they do school pics twice a year at their school. At Zoe's school they sometime's offer a fall and spring option;.

Adorable kids, and I love the pictures. These are so much nicer than the usual studio type, where kids are so posed that they look unnatural. These look like two really happy kids.......

I always purchase the cheapest package for school pictures. I put one in a scrapbook, one in my car and the rest stay in the envelope forever more.
I love the fur collar, very stylish, she knows what looks good. And even though your son looks like he feels a little pain, he is still very handsome!

Melissa, darn it, you put up a post and I'm three days late! Serves me right for not having a bloglines or google reader account! Anyway, sooooooo glad you're back and I just LOVE the pictures, your kids only get cuter and cuter. S also had picture day in school last week but since this is her 7th year taking pictures at school we decided to go with the least expensive package and still it cost us $22!

Now that you're back, you'll stay a while, won't you?

Cuties! But I'm with you - these days just about any parent can get nice candids that don't cost an arm and a leg.

Though my son opted to wear a *tie* and a *suit jacket* for his school pictures....so I'll pony up whatever $$ they ask for. Just to have 'em. =)

Hmmm. Did you pay already, or can you send them back? They are very cute pictures, so I would go for the cheapest option if I could, to send in Christmas cards to family. It's fun to look back, too, even at photos that you think could have been better.

What beautiful children you have. :)
